What to Do When a Guest Leaves a Mess (or Damage)

Most turnovers are routine. Occasionally you will open the door to something that is not. Having a process makes it much less stressful.

Document before anything is touched

Ask your cleaner to take photos on arrival if the condition looks unusual, before cleaning or moving anything. Timestamped photos are the foundation of any claim.

Report through the booking platform

If the issue is damage or a rule violation, report it through the platform where the guest booked, using its own process and deadlines. Those timelines vary by platform, so check them rather than assuming.

Talk to your cleaner

An unusually heavy clean takes longer. Agree on any extra pay before the cleaner starts, and note it in the job messages so there is a record.

Learn from it

Look for patterns. If a house rule keeps getting broken, make it clearer in your listing and welcome message.
